North Korean leader Kim Jong Un traveled to China for a surprise visit to the border town of Dandong, South Korea’s official news agency Yonhap reported on Saturday, crossing via a bridge that was opened a few weeks ago.
Crossing the Yalu River Amid Strict Border Security
Kim crossed the border via the four-lane, 3-kilometer road bridge across the Yalu River linking Dandong with the North Korean city of Sinuiju, Yonhap reported, citing an anonymous government source in Seoul. The bridge was opened in mid-October. It is intended to facilitate trade between the two countries. Security measures in Dandong had been stepped up by Friday, with reports of an imminent visit by high-ranking North Korean officials.
Neither Chinese nor North Korean authorities have so far confirmed the visit. The trip coincides with the anniversary of China’s entry into the Korean War, known in China as the “War of Resistance Against the US and Aid to Korea.” It has not yet been confirmed whether Kim will take part in any commemorative ceremonies.
Trade Ties and Sanctions Context
North Korea faces United Nations restrictions stemming from its nuclear weapons ambitions, and Beijing serves as its primary commercial partner. In June, Chinese President Xi Jinping travelled to North Korea on a state visit. Chinese military personnel backed North Korean forces in the conflict against South Korea and the United Nations troops led by the US during the 1950-53 Korean War.
