Kirsis suggests finding another place for Lucavsala gardeners

He said the football stadium itself is not planned to be built on the site where the vegetable gardens are currently located, but the development of connecting infrastructure could impact market gardeners.

At the same time, the mayor of Riga emphasized that this is by no means news, since the development of Lucavsala and the construction of new streets have been noted in the plans of the capital for several decades.

“It’s clear that this could have an impact [на огороды]. We can talk about different balancing mechanisms, say, about providing people somewhere else with space for these vegetable gardens,” Kirsis admitted.

He emphasized that Lucavsala, after a thorough assessment, was recognized by experts as the best place for the construction of a new football stadium.

As reported, the association of family gardens “Kazas sēklis” calls on the Riga City Council to reconsider the initiative to build a football stadium in Lucavsala, according to a letter prepared by the association to the deputies of the Riga City Council.

The letter states that the association has 326 vegetable gardens, which are needed by their owners and tenants for growing food, educating children, as well as for other recreational activities. At the same time, the authors of the letter do not hide the fact that some of the gardens are not put in order, but the demand for the territory has recently increased and almost all land plots are under management.

It has already been reported that on April 2, at a meeting of the City Property Committee of the Riga City Council, a draft decision was supported on the transfer to the Latvian Football Federation (LFF) for free use for a period of five years of a ten-hectare land plot for the construction of a national football stadium in Lucavsala.

The final decision on allocating land to LFF for free use will have to be made by the Riga City Council.
