A Contemporary Lens on Verdi’s Classic
Composed by Giuseppe Verdi with a libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, La Traviata debuted in 1853, drawing inspiration from Alexandre Dumas fils’ novel The Lady of the Camellias. The narrative follows Violetta Valéry, a courtesan grappling with social appearance and a terminal illness who finds temporary truth in her relationship with Alfredo Germont. In this modern interpretation spearheaded by director Ignacio Ramírez, Violetta appears as a contemporary social icon whose public persona contrasts with her private medical reality.
The visual framework relies on a stark black-and-white color palette. Set and costume design, handled by Valentina Maldonado alongside GAPITE Sastrería Teatral, incorporate physical mirrors to emphasize themes of superficiality and personal vulnerability. Musical direction is overseen by Miguel Ángel Castro, who centers the score on Verdi’s structural use of the nineteenth-century waltz to mirror the dramatic pacing outlined in the composer’s historical correspondence.
International and Local Artists Lead the Cast
Soprano Annya Pinto leads the cast as Violetta Valéry, returning to Chile after establishing her career in European houses including the Palau de les Arts in Valencia and the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro. The principal roles of Alfredo Germont and Giorgio Germont are filled by Brazilian artists Maurício Etchebehere and Leandro Abreu, respectively, through a partnership with Cia. Ópera São Paulo. Additional solistic roles feature local talent including Nataly García, Valeria Vega Matus, Pablo Carrasco, Íñigo Poutay, and Nikolas Tobar.
Musical accompaniment is provided by a 36-instrumentist orchestra assembled through an open international call that gathered over 120 submissions across 13 countries, joined by the Valparaíso-based vocal ensemble Coro Sortilegio. Theater director Vanessa Grondona notes that the collaborative programming during 2026 aims to re-establish the venue’s active cultural footprint through shared productions spanning classical opera and theatrical staging.

Municipal Theater Partners with Lírica Disidente for 2026 Season
The staging forms part of a broader collaborative strategy between the municipal theater and Lírica Disidente, an organization active since 2018 in developing alternative operatic circuits across Chile. General director Nicolás Vásquez highlights that the partnership brings large-scale lyric performance to historical venues while maintaining independent production methodologies. Alongside La Traviata, the theater’s 2026 season includes concurrent presentations such as Jesus Christ Superstar, supported by institutional collaborators including Duoc UC, AIEP, the Fundación de Orquestas Infantiles y Juveniles de Chile, and Gelatería Artesanal Miró.
