Ahead of the 2026/2027 academic session and the return of students and pupils, the Lagos State Government has upgraded safety, security, and health protocols across all schools. Based on reports from the News Agency of Nigeria, public secondary and primary schools throughout the state are set to open on Monday.
Commissioner Urges Vigilance and Shared Responsibility
State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education Jamiu Alli-Balogun urged school communities to remain alert and take necessary steps to protect learners and staff. The directive was issued in a statement released by Basirat Lawal, the ministry’s Director of Public Affairs.
Alli-Balogun emphasized that the state government remains committed to safeguarding the wellbeing of children. He called on parents, teachers, school administrators, and other stakeholders to treat safety and health as a shared responsibility.
“The new session provides another opportunity to strengthen learning, discipline, character development, innovation and excellence across schools through shared commitment and collective responsibility,” Alli-Balogun said.
The commissioner instructed everyone within school environments to promptly notify relevant authorities regarding any health concerns, broken infrastructure, hazardous conditions, or security threats.
Hygiene and Environmental Standards
The Lagos State Government directed schools to maintain clean, safe, and conducive learning environments. Alli-Balogun stressed the importance of functional water supply systems, proper sanitation, and adequate hygiene facilities to protect both learners and staff members.
Under the enhanced guidelines, schools must ensure that classrooms are properly ventilated and that frequently touched surfaces are cleaned regularly. Non-teaching personnel, administrators, and teachers are anticipated to set a positive example by upholding rigorous levels of safety, environmental cleanliness, and personal hygiene.
Pupils and students have been advised to practice good personal hygiene by washing their hands regularly, avoiding littering, practicing proper respiratory hygiene, and disposing of waste responsibly. Learners were also specifically advised against sharing personal items.
Model Colleges Schedule
In addition to the Monday resumption for public primary and secondary schools, the Lagos State Government announced that its model colleges are expected to resume on Sunday.
School communities have been urged to cooperate fully with school authorities and to immediately report any situation that could threaten the safety, health, or wellbeing of learners and personnel as the new academic session gets underway.
