Last European attempt to save the nuclear deal

Tehran seeks a home-made reactor… and Mora will visit it on Tuesday

The European Union is seeking a last-ditch effort to salvage the Iran nuclear deal and end the stalemate in the Vienna talks. Josep Borrell, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security, told the British newspaper “Financial Times” that he is seeking a “compromise” to end the crisis, which threatens to undermine European diplomatic efforts that have lasted more than a year to reach an agreement, describing the diplomatic endeavor as “the last bullet.” .

The talks have been suspended since March, the most important of which is Tehran’s insistence that Washington remove the Iranian Revolutionary Guard from the list of foreign terrorist organizations. The newspaper’s report stated that Borrell is studying a scenario in which the name of the “Revolutionary Guard” will be removed from the list, with entities affiliated with it remaining on the list, given that the “Guard” has several arms and a huge business empire.

Borrell said that he wanted the European Union coordinator in the nuclear talks, Enrique Mora, to go to Tehran to discuss the matter, but Tehran “was very reluctant,” while the semi-official Iranian news agency Noor News reported yesterday that Mora will visit Iran on Tuesday. “This trip is a new step in constructive consultations on the few remaining important issues in the Vienna talks,” the agency said on Twitter.

Meanwhile, the deputy head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, Pejman Jamshidi, announced yesterday that Tehran is seeking to establish an Iranian-made nuclear reactor completely. And the Iranian “Fars” news agency quoted Jamshidi as saying that “planning for this is underway, and it is underway.” Jamshidi added that Iran now possesses the “full cycle” of nuclear fuel production, noting that “this cycle has been fully localized, from the stage of raw materials discovery to the treatment of nuclear waste.”
