Leem wants to “communicate on best practices to save time”

Leem has just announced the signing of a sector agreement for the ecological transition. What are the objectives pursued by this agreement?

Pascal Le Guyader : The objective is to engage the entire sector in the field, starting with decarbonization. This is the momentum we wanted to give with this agreement, signed by four trade union organizations.

Concretely, all companies in the sector will have to systematically address the issue of ecological transition in all company negotiations. More particularly, companies with more than 300 employees will be required to create an environmental commission to monitor the subject within the company. They will also have to carry out a carbon assessment of their activities within twelve months of signing. To do this, companies can rely on a tool that we launched in 2022, called CarbonEM.

There will also be objectives on the actions to be undertaken, with at least two actions to be discussed with the social partners, among the four that we are proposing. This could, for example, be on sustainable mobility, collective catering, sustainable purchasing or on objectives for company management and their remuneration. This agreement complements and supports the decarbonization commitments we have made previously.

What exactly is the carbon footprint of the pharmaceutical industry in France?

Thomas Borel : We carried out an assessment of this carbon footprint a little over a year ago. It is a complex exercise to carry out, but we arrived at figures close to Ademe’s estimates in the field. We wanted to distinguish two types of footprint: on the one hand, the carbon footprint on the production of medicines in France, which is 11.8 million tonnes of CO₂ per year, and on the other, the consumption of medicines which represents 18.8 million tonnes, or a total of 26.3 million tonnes of CO equivalent₂for the medicine produced and/or consumed.
