Listen to this article in audio

During the night from Tuesday to Wednesday, two trains, the first carrying passengers on the Athens-Thessaloniki route, and the second, a commercial train, loaded with sheet metal, traveling in the opposite direction, from Thessaloniki to Athens, collided . The violent shock that occurred near the town of Larissa left at least 42 dead and dozens injured, including 25 in serious condition. This is the most serious rail accident experienced by Greece, in shock for two days.

For the spokesman of the firefighters Vassilis Vathrakogiannis, this is a provisional assessment which “unfortunately, will increase as wrecked cars are removed ».

Vassilis Vathrakogiannis and 150 of his fellow firefighters continue to work tirelessly in difficult conditions (the entanglement of pieces of iron) to save any injuries.

370 people, including staff, were on board the two trains.
