Hilde and her husband arrived first, the 2,000 pigs arrived later. Since then, she has sought help from a psychologist. The story is told to us by our colleagues at HLN.

“I still sometimes get all worked up, which is not pleasant for me or my guests,” she says.

Eleven residents of Wuustwezel and Hoogstraten have put the Flemish government on notice not to act against the nuisance caused by intensive livestock farming in their neighborhood. Hilde, also from Hoogstraten, is not one of them, but as a direct neighbor of an industrial pig farmer in Meerle, she knows the impact of odor nuisance.

Hilde particularly enjoys entertaining guests and pampering them, but when it comes to garden parties, she breaks down with stress. “When friends and family come to visit, I’m constantly watching the rain radar to see if it’s going to rain and where the wind is coming from. Bad weather is good news for us, because it means there are no odor nuisances. The good summer weather is bad news, because the nuisance then becomes unbearable. As soon as the sun shines, we close the windows and doors, but even then the smell gets inside. I have scent diffusers everywhere to neutralize this smell. In my closet there are scent bags to prevent my clothes from smelling like manure. In the long run, we organize our whole life around these pigsties. We never had a barbecue in the garden.”
