Chaos erupted at the largest airports in Britain due to a “technical defect”, which led to the cancellation of dozens of flights on Thursday evening and Friday morning, coinciding with the start of the school holidays that usually drive thousands of families to travel abroad.

British Airways was forced to postpone or cancel about 80 flights at London Heathrow Airport on Thursday afternoon, which caused great chaos at the airport, according to what was monitored by Al Arabiya Net.

A large number of domestic flights faced delays of up to an hour, while passengers who were about to travel were told that they were likely to face delays, according to local press reports in London.

More flights were canceled Friday morning at West London’s Heathrow Airport, one of the busiest airports in Europe, causing chaos at the airport.

A report published by the newspaper (METRO) said that today, Friday, is expected to be the busiest day for air travel in Britain since before the Corona epidemic, that is, several years ago.

About 16,000 passengers have so far been affected by the travel chaos.

On its website, British Airways urged travelers to check the status of their flight before heading to the airport.

A spokesperson for the airline said: “While the vast majority of our flights continue to operate today, we have canceled some of our short-haul flights from Heathrow due to the spillover effect of a technical issue we experienced yesterday.”

“We have apologized to customers whose flights were affected and offered them the option of rebooking to an alternative flight with us or another airline, or requesting a refund,” he added.

Air travel is expected to be the busiest over the next few days as the three-day weekend coincides with the start of the half-term break, a week-long holiday for schools in Britain.

More than 11,300 flights are scheduled to depart from British airports during the three-day weekend (Saturday, Sunday and Monday), equivalent to two million seats.

A British report said that 3,000 flights were scheduled from British airports on Friday, with Heathrow Airport reaching the largest number of arrivals, making it the busiest day since December 20, 2019.
