The Australian government announced on Saturday November 11 that a cybersecurity incident « important » affected several ports in the country operated by the DP World Australia group. The government is coordinating the response to a “significant cybersecurity incident affecting several Australian ports” and collaborates with the operator to “measure the impact”said the Australian Minister of the Interior Clare O’Neil on X (formerly Twitter).
The Australian Cyber Security Center advises the port operator and it “provides technical assistance”explained the national cybersecurity coordinator, Darren Goldie, on “the interruption is likely to continue for several days and will impact the movement of goods into and out of the country”.
According to Bloomberg, the Australian executive called a crisis meeting on Saturday to coordinate its response to the hack, which was detected on Friday and led DP World to limit access to four of Australia’s largest ports. Mr Goldie said the agencies would meet again on Sunday and work with the company to resume operations.
Port closures in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Fremantle threaten to dampen supply chains, which have yet to fully recover from the effects of the pandemic. This disruption comes at a time when DP World’s operations are already affected by an ongoing strike by the Maritime Union of Australia, over wages and better working conditions.
Repeated attacks
The Australian Federal Police have opened an investigation, said Darren Goldie. The coordinator, a former Australian Air Force official, was appointed last July in response to several cyberattacks in the country.
Just over a year ago, more than nine million customers of Optus, one of Australia’s largest telecommunications providers, had their personal data stolen in a cyberattack. Last week, the same operator was the victim of a giant breakdown, the causes still unexplained.
