Massive 6.6 Richter Scale Earthquake Hits Japan, Triggering Tsunami Alert

An earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale shook Japanese islands to the east of the archipelago on Thursday morning, triggering a tsunami alert.

The earthquake, which was noted at 11 a.m. local time (4 a.m. BST), occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

The warning that was subsequently issued warned of a 1-meter tsunami on the Izu Islands on Thursday, and a 0.2-meter tsunami on the Japanese mainland and for the Ogasawara Islands.

Residents were asked to move away from the coast. There was no information yet available on any damage.
