After the Laver Cup next weekend, it’s over: Roger Federer announced his retirement from professional tennis last Thursday. One of the first rivals to speak out publicly and emotionally was Rafael Nadal: «It was a pleasure, but also an honor and a privilege to share all these years with you and to experience so many great moments on and off the pitch. »
Then the Spanish superstar continues: “We will have many more moments together in the future, there are still many things we can do together, we know that.” And that’s where the Real Madrid football club comes into play. The royals are currently renovating their Santiago Bernabéu stadium for over half a billion into the “most modern football temple in the world”. The stadium should be completed in the course of the next year – and for the opening one wants to offer the fans an absolute spectacle: Rafael Nadal against Roger Federer in front of more than 81,000 spectators. That would be a new spectator world record for a tennis match.
Rumors about such a show match in Madrid have been around for a long time. According to media reports, including from ESPN, the plans in the Spanish capital should continue to exist even after Federer’s resignation. What are the Madrilenians hoping for? Rafael Nadal. He’s a big Madrid fan – for example, he really wanted to see his team in the stadium for the Champions League final in May, even though his quarter-finals in the French Open were due the next day. He even walked to the game because of traffic jams in the French capital.
