Microsoft’s mixed reality headset: The HoloLens 2 gets Windows 11

Microsoft has Windows 11 for the HoloLens 2 as a free upgrade announced. It is scheduled for delivery in the first half of 2023. Windows 11 aims to improve the security of Hololens 2 (hands-on) and offers the latest tools for developers. The upgrade also promises continuous platform support – at least as long as Windows 11 is supported.

With the upgrade, HoloLens 2 users will continue to receive monthly security updates that strengthen the protection of sensitive information while improving app performance. In short: HoloLens 2 is supplied with new versions and features via Windows Update.

In addition, with the upgrade, development teams have new tools such as Microsoft Edge Webview2 Control to embed web technologies (including HTML, CSS and Javascript) into their native applications.

Markers in 3D space

In addition to Windows 11 for the HoloLens 2, Dynamics 365 is also being expanded with functions. Among other things, users can use 3D annotations and a headset to mark anything in the field of view or provide them with drawings. The software also remembers the location of the markers in space, so they don’t have to be pinned to real objects.

Also new is the restricted mode, with which the user rights of various mixed reality apps can be restricted or extended. This can be relevant in enterprise environments.

Microsoft Teams calls on HoloLens 2 have also been improved. The new update includes additional features such as the ability to turn video on or off before a call, as well as improved call streaming reliability and quality.
