Monty Don to Host Final Gardeners’ World Episode This Friday

Horticulturist and broadcaster Monty Don will host his final episode of the long-running series Gardeners’ World this Friday, November 6. The 71-year-old presenter, who has been at the helm for 23 years, announced that his departure marks the end of a chapter that has spanned approximately 700 episodes.

In a video update shared on the official BBC Instagram account, Don confirmed his exit, stating, This Friday will be my very last Gardeners’ World. He added that while his time filming at his private Herefordshire garden, Longmeadow, has come to an end, the experience has been a complete privilege. The final broadcast is scheduled to air at 8pm on BBC Two.

A Departure After Decades of Service

Don first joined the programme in 2003, initially filming at a rented garden in Stratford-upon-Avon known as Berryfields. In 2011, following a break from the show, he returned to host from his own property, Longmeadow, which has since become a familiar setting for millions of viewers. The BBC has paid tribute to the presenter, noting that he has inspired and guided millions of viewers with his warmth, wisdom and passion for gardening throughout his tenure.

Reflecting on his decision to step down, Don explained that the choice was made after a moment of clarity earlier this summer. Writing in Gardeners’ World magazine, he shared, I woke up and knew it was time to stop. Simple as that. He noted that while he enjoyed the craft of programme making, the demands of the role were constant, and he felt it was the right time for a change.

Don Reflects on Show’s Lasting Viewer Bond

The presenter, who lives near Leominster, originally took over as the programme’s lead host from Alan Titchmarsh. Sharon Fisher, the BBC Studios Series Editor for the programme, noted that the departure marks the end of a remarkable chapter in the programme’s history, while Kate Phillips, the BBC’s Chief Content Officer, thanked the presenter for his contributions. Don noted that the production process meant that although his commute was short, he essentially took the job with him 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

In his reflection, Don stated, That connection with millions, not just in Britain but across the world, who share a love of gardens, plants and the natural world is something I have always treasured and which I increasingly believe to be at the heart of a life well lived. He further praised the superlative BBC team he worked with, adding that he had always relished the craft of programme making.

Future Projects and Clarifications

Despite his exit from the series, Don has explicitly stated that he is not retiring from his career. He indicated plans to pursue new avenues, including writing more books and developing other television projects. I am not retiring – heaven forfend – there are programmes I want to make, books I want to write, family I want to spend more time with, he said. The BBC confirmed that they look forward to working with him on future projects.

Don emphasized that his connection to the natural world and his personal gardening work will continue at his home. And of course, I will still be gardening, dog by side, here at Longmeadow, he reassured followers. He noted that his enthusiasm for visiting gardens globally remains as keen as ever, though he acknowledged that the time available for these endeavors is growing limited.
