Music: a more expensive subscription does not scare away subscribers, according to the NMPA

Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon Music in ambush. These are the 3 music streaming champions in the United States. Services which have, for two of them, gained subscribers despite a price increase.

Streaming services are usually pretty tight-lipped about their subscriber numbers. Apple hasn’t said anything on the subject for four years, while Spotify and Amazon are more talkative, but on global rather than regional volumes.

During a meeting of the National Music Publishers Association (NMPA) in New York in mid-June, David Israelite, the boss of this body representing labels, explained that the number of subscribers of each, in the United States United, could finally be determined.

The period analyzed dates back to February 2023. On this date, Spotify was in the lead with 44.4 million paying subscribers. Apple followed with 32.6 million customers and Amazon blew its neck with 29.3 million subscribers. Far behind this trio were YouTube Music and Pandora with 8.5 and 2.4 million customers respectively.

These figures illustrate a ranking at a given moment, unfortunately they do not allow us to know more about the dynamics of each other: who is progressing, who is stagnating, etc.

The latest known global figures are 210 million paid subscribers for Spotify last March, 60 million for Apple in 2019 and 55 million (trial accounts included) for Amazon in January 2020.

Another interesting point given by the president of the NMPA relates to the question of the increases in tariffs and their consequences on the subscription. Apple Music and Amazon have each raised their prices in recent months, Tidal is about to do so and the boss of Spotify has made no secret of his desire to do so in turn. This is a strong demand from labels who believe that music is insufficiently valued financially.

After Apple, Amazon increases the price of its music streaming service

According to David Israelite, neither Apple nor Amazon suffered waves of customer departures – in the United States a priori – after their increases, on the contrary: “ They saw growth in their subscriptions “. A phenomenon that makes the manager say that the price of music: “ continues to be undervalued on digital services » and to add : « We still have a long way to go. But hopefully this new information will be the encouragement the industry needs to get prices where they need to be. ».
