National Day in Luxembourg: Celebrations, Fireworks, and Concerts Explained

The course of the National Day in Luxembourg has been known since Monday: changing of the guard, torchlight procession, fireworks and concerts… We tell you everything about these two days of festivities.

Like every year, the capital will celebrate the birthday of the Grand Duke from June 22 with, as a high point, the fireworks. The next day, place for the official ceremony at the Philharmonie and the military parade.

Thursday, June 22:

AT 16 h, it will be possible to attend, on this eve of the national holiday, the traditional changing of the guard in front of the Grand Ducal Palace. Then later at 21 h 20 precisely, you should not miss the torchlight procession: 650 m long, the procession of some 2,500 people will leave from the Grand-Rue to reach Place Guillaume-II. In the meantime, strolling through the squares of the capital should allow you to wait without finding the time long, as the programs are dense.

Indeed, everywhere in the city, concerts will sound from 5 p.m. on various squares. Folk groups, municipal bands and groups of all musical genres will have a great time. For example, at Place d’Armes, from 6 p.m. until 1 a.m. Luxembourg folklore, the Luxembourg-Bonnevoie municipal fanfare and DJ Simon, will follow one another under the foliage of trees illuminated by thousands of fireflies in the colors “rout-waïss- blo’.

The Grand Duke and Grand Duchess will be welcomed at 9:30 p.m by Mayor Lydie Polfer and the First Alderman, Serge Wilmes, on the stairs in front of the Town Hall. From the grandstand, they will be able to enjoy the passage of the torchlight procession and hear theOur homeland interpreted by Claire Parsons and Jackie Moontan, before leaving Place de la Constitution.

From there, they will be able to watch the fireworks displayed in honor of the Grand Duke above the Adolphe bridge in 23 h. Lasting 17 minutes, the pyrotechnic show will be accompanied by music composed for the occasion by the City Conservatory.

Friday, June 23:

The official National Day program will begin on Friday, June 23 at 10 h with an official ceremony at the Philharmonie, followed by the 21 cannon shots fired in honor of the Grand Duke at Fetschenhof in 11 h. The traditional taking up arms and the military parade where you can see soldiers, police, firefighters and first aiders will then take place in the avenue de la Liberté from 12 h. A little later in the afternoon, the Te Deum will take place at 16 h 30 at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Luxembourg, in the presence of members of the Grand Ducal family.

The children will not be left out and will have the opportunity to let off steam at the Kinnekswiss. The Capel of the City’s school hostels service will indeed organize its party there… of games – the Spillfest – of 10 a.m. to 6 p.m, completely free. Associations and artists, some of whom belong to the theater world, have planned more than a hundred workshops and games that are both unusual and instructive.

And as in 2022, this national holiday will take on the air of a festival, over two days: international headliners and local groups will perform on the Glacis, from 5 p.m. On the program for these “City Sounds”, rock and electro: the Brussels DJ Lost Frquencies, the Spaniard Wade and the duo from Flavor Trip will perform on Thursday. The next day, the English of The 1975 (video), the Irish of The Script, and the talented Francis of Delirium and local Ice in My Eyes will hear their latest sounds. Everything will be free.

There will be the central point of the festivities, with the holding of the Escher Volleksfest where concert stages and stands will have invaded the square. The Hereditary Grand Duke will light the scouts’ campfire before leaving. The fireworks will be set off at 11 p.m.

On June 23, the stands in the square will be open again from 11 a.m. After strolling among the stalls and eating to the sound of concerts and entertainment, visitors can dance at the popular ball from 4 p.m.
