Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov, using the example of his family, told in interview aif.rupublished on March 26, about relations between citizens of Russia and Ukraine.
The journalist asked him what to answer to Ukrainian relatives and acquaintances, who until 2022 were completely loyal to Russia, but now cannot understand and accept what is happening. Peskov, responding, gave the example of his wife, Olympic figure skating champion Tatyana Navka, who is from Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine. She had childhood friends there, with whom she had often communicated before: “they visited us, we spent our holidays together.” But after the start of the SVO, communication stopped: “they rejected her, and an absolute wall arose,” and for Tatyana “it was very painful.”
“And then these girlfriends left Ukraine, now they live in Europe and don’t want to return. And communication was restored, the wife communicates well with them again,” says Peskov.
They avoid some questions to which they now cannot find answers, but have returned to “their forty-year friendship.” But there is no contact yet with relatives, of whom Tatyana also has many there – second and fourth cousins.
“By the way, it wasn’t easy for them there because of this relationship; very uncomfortable conditions were created for them… She doesn’t communicate with them yet, but I am convinced that this communication will improve over time anyway,” Peskov notes.
Now is a very difficult period in the history of the two peoples, he admits. Russia is taking all necessary measures “to guarantee its future.”
“And he is fighting the state, which, unfortunately, received the bacillus of neo-Nazism in 2014. Neo-Nazism exists in Europe and America, but nowhere has it taken root in power as much as in Ukraine,” Peskov said.
At the same time, he expressed confidence that “when this passes,” both peoples will restore communication, and “this will happen quite quickly” by the standards of global history.
