The new Faculty of Medicine and Nursing, Projected by the Basque Public University, EHU/UPV, construction will begin next month next to the Basurto Hospital after the economic and price crisis in the construction sector knocked down its first start-up attempt.

On that occasion, the academic institution even awarded the project to the companies Construcciones Adolfo Sobrino, Altuna and Uría; and Cycasa Quarries and Constructions for €53.3 million, a similar amount for which it went out to tender, but after several months of analyzing the budgets and verifying that the cost was going to exceed the estimate by 20%, they decided to resign.
For this reason, EHU/UPV had to update prices, last December it put the work back to tender for an amount of 64 million euros; wait until there were interested construction companies, this time six groups have presented themselves, and delay the start-up of the building, it is expected that it will be able to be with students and teachers for the academic year 2026-2027, a year later than expected. This week the project has been awarded again for just over 62 million to Ferrovial and Eraikuntza Birgaikuntza Artapen.
All this to lower the academic activity of the Leioa campus and create a new building in Bilbao that will house the degrees of Medicine, Physiotherapy and Nursing, as well as the seven official master’s degrees in the area of Health Sciences. This will create an advanced pole in university education, research and knowledge transfer, with a great academic and business future.
