New York Tech Expands Athletics and Recreation Programs

New York Tech is actively recruiting student-athletes for its Sprint Football team, marking the university’s entry into the Collegiate Sprint Football League and offering a new competitive outlet for students who meet the sport’s strict 183-pound weight requirement. The program, which follows traditional NCAA football rules while enforcing the designated weight limit, is the first Sprint Football team offered at the Long Island campus.

Whether students are looking to compete at a high level, stay active, meet new people or simply take a break from classwork, the department emphasizes that no matter their experience or ability, there is a place for them to play, participate and thrive within the vibrant campus community.

Sprint Football Recruitment Targets Athletes Under 183 Pounds

The university’s Sprint Football squad will compete in the Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL), a format that maintains standard NCAA football gameplay while requiring participants to compete under a designated 183-pound weight cap. Prospective student-athletes can submit interest forms through the athletics department’s online portal and follow the team’s progress on Instagram, with the university noting that its football field has already been striped and is ready for the upcoming season.

Sprint football requires student-athletes to compete under a designated weight limit of 183 pounds. The CSFL provides the structured league framework for the new team, positioning NYIT among institutions fielding sprint football squads while maintaining the full contact nature of the sport under NCAA guidelines.

Club Teams Compete in Basketball, Volleyball and Badminton Leagues

The men’s and women’s basketball programs compete in the National Club Basketball Association (BCBBA), while the men’s and women’s volleyball squads participate in the Eastern Collegiate Volleyball Association (ECVA), facing opponents across the eastern region in structured league play.

A co-ed badminton team rounds out the club offerings, competing against local Long Island colleges as part of the Long Island Collegiate Badminton League (LICBL). Students interested in joining existing teams or proposing new ones are encouraged to contact the athletics department directly to explore options.

Intramurals, Courts and Fitness Center Expand Campus Access

For students not pursuing club-level competition, NYIT offers co-ed intramural leagues in basketball, flag football, soccer, tennis and volleyball, with participation open to individuals or groups who may join at any time during the academic year. Sign-ups are managed through the CampusGroups platform, and the university is continuing to add more sports and activities to the growing list of co-ed offerings available to the campus community.

The campus has also brought online brand-new basketball, tennis, President’s Stadium and pickleball courts available to students, faculty and staff for recreation, fitness and friendly competition. Reservations for university affiliates can be made via the Court Reservation Form, while external rental inquiries are directed to Aaron Spiewak at [email protected] for those seeking to use the facilities outside the university community.

Recreational programming extends well beyond organized sports. The Student Activity Center (SAC) hosts fun activities and events, while the RecRe program allows community members to borrow games and equipment for their own use on campus fields and courts. Students can also participate in off-campus outings to New York City parks and fields, as well as hiking, skating and rock climbing excursions, with access to Citibike passes and equipment rentals to explore the city. The bright, airy fitness center at the Long Island campus provides workout space for students, faculty and staff looking to exercise before, after or between classes.
