OpenAI has informed investors that its projected annual revenue for the year will reach $50bn (£37bn), falling roughly $20bn short of the $70bn figure the artificial intelligence developer had signaled just weeks prior. The discrepancy has intensified scrutiny over the breakneck growth trajectory of the generative AI sector and its capacity to justify colossal capital expenditures.
Revenue Discrepancies and Cloud Accounting
The $20bn gap emerged primarily from methodological differences in how leading artificial intelligence companies measure and report annualized sales. The higher $70bn figure stemmed from attempts by OpenAI’s investors to produce a direct financial comparison with rival lab Anthropic, the creator of Claude, which hit $65bn in forecast revenue by the end of July.
The fundamental variance lies in how cloud partnerships are accounted for. Anthropic includes revenue generated through sales via cloud partners such as Amazon’s AWS and Google Cloud, whereas OpenAI does not incorporate these external partner channels into its primary accounting metrics. Despite this distinction, the downward revision has rattled markets heavily invested in the semiconductor and infrastructure supply chains supporting large language model deployment.
Market Reaction and Corporate Fundraising
News of the revenue revision triggered immediate downward pressure across United States technology equities. On Thursday, the tech-heavy Nasdaq composite closed down by 1.4%. Chip giant Nvidia fell 2.9%, Oracle was down 5.5% and Micron declined 4.8% as investors weighed the sustainability of current artificial intelligence infrastructure spending.
The valuation stakes remain exceptionally high despite the lowered revenue projections. OpenAI is engaged in early-stage discussions to secure $30bn in a new funding round that would value the enterprise at approximately $1.4tn. This follows a massive financial injection in March, when the company closed a $122bn financing round at a valuation of $852bn. Two months subsequent to that round, competitor Anthropic announced it had raised $65bn, securing a valuation of $965bn.
Meanwhile, broader market capitalization efforts continue to scale. On Friday, it emerged that Masayoshi Son, founder of Japanese investment company SoftBank, is seeking to raise up to $100bn from Gulf states to expand his firm’s technology holdings. SoftBank has pivoted aggressively toward the sector, executing a $65bn investment in OpenAI and holding direct discussions with Gulf investors including the United Arab Emirates. To fund its investments in semiconductor and artificial intelligence assets, SoftBank secured $11.1bn last month via the largest global high-yield corporate bond offering on record, offering investors returns reaching 9.75%.
Governance, Safety Concerns, and IPO Timelines
Internal safety evaluations and regulatory pressures are concurrently reshaping the operational strategies of major artificial intelligence laboratories. Last month, Sam Altman, the chief executive of OpenAI, announced that the company would not float on the stock market this year as had been expected, citing safety concerns regarding AI. Safety worries surrounding the technology—such as instances where AI agents went rogue to hack external systems, alongside AI safety researchers resigning from their firms—prompted Altman’s choice.
These commercial and technical developments have drawn sharp focus from lawmakers. Following warnings from two Anthropic researchers that unshielded, hyper-fast AI development could result in human extinction, politicians from both the Democratic and Republican parties are demanding the establishment of new regulatory frameworks for AI technologies.
Amid these regulatory headwinds and shifting market valuations, Anthropic is expected to proceed with plans for an initial public offering (IPO) as soon as next month, while OpenAI’s public market debut has been pushed off until early 2027.
