OpenAI Wants You to Call Data Centers ‘Compute Campuses

OpenAI is attempting to rebrand traditional data centers as “compute campuses,” according to an OpenAI spokesperson who confirmed the preferred nomenclature to Business Insider, a shift designed to reflect the scale of long-term investments in energy and skilled labor amid sliding public approval for the infrastructure.

The Evolution of AI Infrastructure Newspeak

The term “compute campuses” joins a rapidly expanding lexicon of industry rebrandings that kicked off in September. That month, the term “artificial intelligence” itself faced a trend when President Trump mandated the use of “Super Intelligence” among officers under his authority, successfully steering several industry leaders toward the phrase—though OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman notably abstained from adopting it.

OpenAI’s official rationale frames the new terminology around physical scale and community integration. “Compute campuses better describes the scale and role of the infrastructure we’re building for AI,” an OpenAI spokesperson told Business Insider, adding that “these are long-term investments in computing, energy infrastructure and skilled work.”

Public Opinion and the Environmental Cost of Data Centers

The rebrand arrives against a backdrop of deep public skepticism regarding AI and its physical footprint. A Pew Research Center survey conducted over the summer revealed that only 16% of Americans maintain a positive view of AI’s future societal role.

Compounding that skepticism, a separate September Pew survey examined public sentiment toward data centers across environmental impact, utility costs, neighborhood quality of life, local jobs, and tax revenue. Only 4% of respondents believed data centers impacted all of those areas positively. A recent Pew Research poll found 54% of Americans explicitly view AI data centers as environmentally detrimental.

While major infrastructure builders including Meta, Amazon, and Microsoft have committed millions of dollars to local communities and surrounding schools to ameliorate pushback, OpenAI is betting that linguistic reframing will shift the needle. “We want the communities hosting that infrastructure to help shape it and share in the opportunities it creates,” the OpenAI spokesperson told Business Insider.

Electoral Politics and the Limits of Rebranding

Physical server farms have officially crossed from municipal zoning disputes into frontline electoral politics. Strategically weaponizing opponents’ proximity to tech infrastructure has emerged as a distinct feature of recent campaigns, with critics coining derogatory labels like “data senator” to gain public traction.

Whether the updated terminology will disrupt these partisan attacks remains an open question. As noted in coverage by Axios, OpenAI was simultaneously preparing for a potential blue wave in Tuesday’s midterm elections that could introduce a significantly more regulatory-minded government.

Gizmodo reached out to OpenAI for official confirmation of the compute campus rebrand.
