Pakistan’s PTI Seeks Contempt Action After Jailed Imran Khan’s Hospital Move

Pakistan’s legal and political crisis deepened on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, as the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party initiated legal action following the transfer of jailed Imran Khan to a state hospital for a check-up before returning him to jail.

Government Challenges Supreme Court Medical Directive

The latest legal confrontation follows a Supreme Court order issued Tuesday mandating that the 73-year-old Imran Khan be moved to Shifa International Hospital in the capital Islamabad within the next two days for comprehensive medical examinations. According to the three-bench court order, Khan would also be granted weekly family visits and allowed to speak with his sons via telephone twice weekly.

However, the federal government announced late Tuesday that it would challenge the directive. Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar stated in a video broadcast shared on X by state broadcaster Radio Pakistan that the ruling “does not fall within the four corners of the law.”

The administration is filing a review petition demanding that Khan’s medical tests be conducted at a government facility instead of the private hospital designated by the court. “Until such time as evidence or material is available to show that government hospitals are unable to provide this type of treatment or cannot do so, such arrangements are normally not made,” Mr. Tarar said.

Medical Oversight and Court Conditions

The Supreme Court’s bench stipulated that Khan’s personal physician, Faisal Sultan, along with his sister and medical doctor, Uzma Khan, “shall be permitted to remain associated with the prisoner’s medical examination and treatment.”

Judges also imposed strict limitations surrounding the medical transfer, warning against any public gatherings on hospital grounds or the exploitation of Khan’s health information for political gain. The court cautioned that any breaches of these conditions could result in the hospital transfer order being reversed. The next hearing in the case is scheduled for September 16.

Khan’s ongoing incarceration stems from convictions late last year alongside his wife, Bushra Bibi, on a series of charges resulting in a 17-year prison sentence. The former prime minister maintains that all charges against him are politically motivated.

Health concerns have frequently punctuated his detention. Earlier this year, Khan received eye treatment at a hospital, with his family and legal representation stating at the time that he had lost most of the vision in his right eye. Khan served as prime minister from 2018 until his removal in a 2022 no-confidence vote amid escalating political tensions with the country’s military establishment, an ouster that subsequently sparked nationwide protests in May 2023.

As legal teams prepare for the upcoming review petition and the scheduled September 16 hearing, the institutional standoff between the judiciary, the government, and the PTI over Khan’s medical access and detention conditions remains unresolved.
