A mother in Ningbo, mainland China, participated in a parent-child tug-of-war competition at her child’s school. In order to use her strength better, she tied a hemp rope to her right wrist. According to Chinese media reports, the mother recently participated in a parent-child tug-of-war competition held by her child’s school. In order to be more effective during the competition, she decided to tie a hemp rope to her right wrist. Unexpectedly, after the game started, her wrists were strangled as soon as the opponent exerted force. The mother was in severe pain and screamed for help, but no one noticed her due to the noise at the scene. After the game, she collapsed to the ground.
Afterwards, when the mother was taken to Ningbo Second Hospital by ambulance, her wrist joint had been completely fractured and dislocated, and she was diagnosed with a wrist dislocation. Guo Zonghui, deputy director of the Department of Reconstructive Microsurgery, said, “When I first saw this patient, her right hand was very swollen, her wrist was severely deformed, the skin that had been strangled by the rope was necrotic, and the entire palm turned purple due to ischemia.”
The wrist joint was violently strangled, two arteries were severed, and long-segment blood vessels were damaged. Long-segment venous blood vessels were embolized. The wrist joint was completely fractured and dislocated, and a ring of skin nearly 1 cm wide was squeezed and necrotic. Doctors warn that in order to save the palm, blood circulation in the palm must be restored as soon as possible. However, it had already been 3 hours since the mother arrived at the hospital, and thrombus had formed in the capillaries of her palms. The longer the delay, the greater the possibility of necrosis of her palms due to ischemia. The hospital immediately opened a green channel for her and carried out emergency surgery.
Fortunately, the mother was fine after the first aid. She only needed to remove the steel pins in her hand and continue hand rehabilitation, but the subsequent failure of her right hand would still be affected to a certain extent. Guo Zonghui reminded not to tie the rope to wrists, arms, waist and other body parts during tug-of-war. “The force of the rope is no less powerful than scissors, and strangle injuries are even more serious than cuts with sharp objects.”
