  • A 76-meter-long research vessel overturned in a dry dock in Edinburgh due to strong winds.

  • 33 people were injured and 15 had to be taken to hospital.

  • RV Petrel used to belong to Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, who died in 2018.

It happened at around 8:35 a.m. local time in the Imperial Dock in the port of Edinburgh: the winds tugging at the 3,000-ton former research vessel RV Petrel were so strong that the colossus began to sway and finally tipped over to starboard. As the “Daily Mail” reports, 33 people were injured – 15 of them had to be taken to the hospital. The people were probably busy with work on board the Petrel.

Ambulances, the police and the fire brigade rushed to the scene, and helicopters were also used. The Coast Guard also rushed to the scene.

The ship is now docked at a 45 degree angle. Authorities urged the public to avoid the area and not to obstruct rescue efforts. No further details are known about the injured. It is unclear whether there are still people on board the ship.

The ship used to belong to Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, who died in 2018, and was used for deep-sea exploration. Named after the Petrel, the Petrel has been in port at Leith since 2020 and was sold by Allen’s heirs just last year.
