Set at 1200 FCFA and 1000 FCFA, these prices per kg of Cocoa and Coffee are considered very low by growers who want a significant increase of more than 2000 FCFA to hope to cope with their numerous operating costs and boost their productivity. A complaint that they gave during the “National Workshop for the revitalization of the Cocoa and Coffee sectors in Gabon”, which the Stabilization and Equalization Funds (Caistab), are organizing from February 13 to 16, 2024.
“We must revise the price upwards, the price per kg of cocoa and coffee; it has to be even 2150 FCFA like in Cameroon, nearby,” said Nguema Mbeng Toussaint, cocoa and coffee farmer in the Mboa-Bitam caton, in the north of the country.
For the workshop participant, Gabon must boost its cocoa and coffee sector through incentive measures. Because too many young graduates are unemployed and these sectors constitute a great opportunity for the Gabonese state to encourage these young people to retrain.
“If we increase the price of a kg of cocoa and coffee, it will even motivate these young people who can be self-employed; we have quite a few young people who are looking for themselves, we must offer them the existing perspectives”he insisted.
For more than 30 years, the production of cocoa and coffee in Gabon has been in decline. The country produces barely 200 tonnes each. As part of the diversification of its economy, the country wants to boost this growth-producing sector.
The National Workshop for the revitalization of the cocoa and coffee sectors, which is held in the north of Libreville, brings together 300 participants, namely: political decision-makers, technical and financial partners, producers, experts, researchers, provincial stakeholders in sectors, industrialists, and processing artisans, representing NGOs and civil society organizations.
