Imminent observation of Kim Hye-kyung’s summons investigation… Relations with Rep. Lee Jae-myung continue to be raised

On the 3rd, it was confirmed that the police summoned and investigated Bae, a key figure in the alleged misuse of corporate cards by Kim Hye-kyung, the spouse of Lee Jae-myung of the Democratic Party of Korea.

According to the investigative authorities, the anti-corruption and economic crime investigation team of the Gyeonggi Nambu Police Agency called and investigated Bae, who worked as a special rank 5 employee in the general affairs department of the Gyeonggi Provincial Office when Lee was serving as the governor of Gyeonggi Province, as a suspect this morning.

Bae, who is suspected of acting as Kim’s assistant, is at the center of various suspicions such as the private misuse of Gyeonggi-do corporate cards and the issuance of illegal prescriptions that have been raised against Kim.

Bae has been investigated as a suspect in a case of accusing him of violating the Public Official Election Act (publication of false facts) related to the allegation, but this is the first time he has been summoned as a suspect in the main investigation of the case.

The police are said to have investigated several facts, such as whether there was any instruction or intervention from Kim and other superiors in the process of using corporate cards against Bae.

After several hours of interrogation, Bae returned home.

As the summons for Mr. Bae, a key figure, were made that day, there are speculations that an investigation into Mr. Kim is imminent.

Previously, in December of last year, the People’s Power argued that “Kim has had Bae as an assistant secretary for three years from 2018” and raised suspicions that “Isn’t the three-year salary of an officer paid with blood tax used for the ‘Kim Hye-kyung protocol’?” Lee, Kim, and Bae were accused of abuse of power and loss of the national treasury.

In February of this year, ahead of the presidential election, Kim mobilized public officials for private errands, such as food delivery and housework, and charged with allegations of paying for personal food with a Gyeonggi corporate card or obtaining illegal prescriptions in the name of another person.

In addition to this complaint, the police received and analyzed all complaints from the Gyeonggi Provincial Office on March 25 that contained the entire history of corporate card use from July 2018, when Bae worked at the provincial government, to September last year.

Then, on April 4, the Gyeonggi Provincial Office, and in mid-May, for several days, 129 places including restaurants where corporate cards were used were seized and searched one after another, collecting related data.

A police official said, “As the matter is under investigation, we cannot confirm whether or not Bae has been summoned.”

Meanwhile, on the 26th of last month, after Bae’s acquaintance, A in her 40s, was investigated as a reference to the case, a controversy arose when she made an extreme choice at a villa in Yeongtong-gu, Suwon.

Mr. A lent his personal credit card to Mr. Bae, and it is known that this card was used for pre-payment for the so-called exchange purpose.

The villa, where A was found dead, was reported to be a building owned by the mother and daughter of Bae.

Mr. A is a former soldier from the Armed Forces Security Command, and it is known that he was appointed as a non-executive director at the Gyeonggi-do Economic Science Promotion Agency at the end of 2020 when Lee was serving as the governor of Gyeonggi Province.

After the death of Mr. A, when the connection with him was constantly raised through some media, Rep. Lee said at a talk concert held in Gangneung, Gangwon on the 30th of last month, “What does this have to do with Lee Jae-myung? Isn’t it?” he said.
