Today between 10.30 a.m. and 1.30 p.m., unknown persons tried to lure several cash from Amstetten with police tricks.

Officials of the Amstetten Police Inspectorate were informed of several attempts at fraud in Amstetten on Tuesday. Between 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., unknown persons had tried at least eight times using so-called police scams to trick randomly selected people into handing over cash.

Perpetrators tell accident stories

They stated that the son or daughter had been involved in an accident and was now arrested. Therefore, a bail should now be paid in order to release the person concerned.

The fraud attempts are reported to the public prosecutor’s office. Further investigations in this regard are being conducted by the staff of the Amstetten Police Inspectorate.

Police tip: Hang up immediately

But how can you protect yourself? Police tip: hang up immediately! In order to protect yourself from fraudsters on the phone, you should not even get involved in a conversation, but hang up immediately. The callers are well educated and trained to build trust on the phone. They know exactly how to bait someone.

In order to increase credibility, the scammers deliberately manipulate their own phone number, which appears on the victim’s phone display. The perpetrators use phone number spoofing to send the number +430133 so that the number appears on the display of the person called. This is to confirm that the call is actually from the police. However, the police never call from the police emergency number 133!

“Never hand over money”

Other tips: “The police will never ask you for money over the phone.
Never pass on confidential information – especially personal and financial circumstances – to strangers, even if they claim to be employees of official bodies. Never give money or valuables to unknown persons, even if they claim to be officials.
Don’t let yourself be unsettled or put under pressure on the phone.
Report suspicious incidents to the nearest police station by calling 059133. Inform and warn relatives and acquaintances today who fall into the victim scheme of scammers – scammers mainly focus on the elderly. Explain how the perpetrators proceeded,” says the Lower Austria state police department.
