Baierbrunn (ots) – In Germany, about every sixth death is due to diabetes. A number that makes it clear: You should already act if you have prediabetes. Prevention physician Professor Peter Schwarz from the Dresden University Hospital warns in the health magazine “Apotheken Umschau”: Even with prediabetes, the risk of secondary diseases such as strokes or chronic kidney disease is increased.
Fat in the stomach makes us sick
The harbingers of type 2 diabetes are not noticeable, but they can be measured: If the blood sugar level is between 100 and 125 milligrams per deciliter (5.6 to 6.9 millimoles per liter) on an empty stomach and between 140 and 199 milligrams after a meal per deciliter (7.8 to 11.0 millimoles per liter), this indicates prediabetes.
People with an “apple” body shape who are significantly overweight and whose fat deposits are mainly in the abdomen are particularly at risk. The risk of cardiovascular complications and kidney damage is greatly increased here. Scientists see the highest risk for type 2 diabetes in people who are obese and have a fatty liver. “The fat in the stomach makes us sick, but the fat in the liver determines how quickly the disease progresses,” explains preventive physician Peter Schwarz.
Reduce calories, reduce sugar consumption
People with prediabetes should act immediately: lose weight, exercise more. When changing your diet, not only the number of calories, but also the consumption of sugar in general should be reduced. Finished goods and heavily processed carbohydrates such as white flour products should be avoided – however, you can eat your fill of all kinds of vegetables.
In addition to a healthy diet, regular exercise is important to improve health, especially blood sugar and blood pressure levels. The World Health Organization recommends 150 minutes of endurance exercise per week and at least two strength training sessions. Tip: Let your doctor advise you on which type of exercise and sport is suitable for you.
