The fight for maintenance does not stop at the ground. 17th and only one point from the red zone, the Toffees could see the competitors at the bottom of the table playing a bad trick on them. Sued by the Premier League for breaking financial rules, Everton could also be sued by five clubs: Leeds, Leicester, Nottingham, Southampton and Burnley.

According to Daily Mail, these formations believe they are entitled to financial compensation. If Everton stays in the Premier League, the two clubs relegated with Southampton would ask for around €350m. Before that, these five teams would have requested that the disciplinary hearing be brought forward. In the event of a point withdrawal, the maintenance race would still have been restarted. But the request was ultimately denied.

Losses estimated at more than 300M

In the Premier League, the financial losses of clubs cannot exceed €120m in three years. At Everton, more than €300m would have been dropped. Before the English league started its investigation, the English media reported that Leeds and Burnley had threatened a year ago to sue the Toffees. In its accounts, Everton estimates that the losses amount to around €250m, which remains above the authorized limit.

Yet guaranteed to go back to the top flight next season, Burnley thinks they are entitled to a piece of the cake. The reason being the financial losses caused by relegation to the second division last season. In addition to television losses, the current club coached by Vincent Kompany had to repay a €75m loan.
