They are making their comeback. After weather that was not favorable for them during a month of June that was too humid and too windy, it seems that the weather over the next few days will be favorable for mosquitoes.
“The weather conditions are excellent. Locally, there will be many more mosquitoes than usual,” explains Bart Knols, mosquito specialist at HLN. “They are all looking for blood to lay their eggs.”
With the recent heat wave, and the humidity returning despite temperatures not decreasing, their development is favorable. This is not exceptional at this time of year. On the other hand, “it is possible to get a large number of mosquitoes in these places at the end of the week,” explains the expert.
The radars are in red and show that mosquitoes are very present in several regions of the country. “But to talk about an ‘explosion of mosquitoes’, it takes weeks in times like today,” explains Bart Knols.
However, he says it is necessary to be careful. Indeed, tiger mosquitoes are at the gates of Belgium, they are already present almost everywhere in France and “are moving further and further north”. “The tiger mosquito bites during the day, when you are sitting on a terrace at 11 a.m., for example.” However, they can be vectors of diseases like dengue: “When they transmit tropical diseases (dengue, chikungunya, etc.), we have problems.”
