Prescribing Physical Exercise for Optimal Health: The Key to Preventing Diseases and Promoting Well-being

The physical exercise prescription from Primary Care consultations would report an “incalculable benefit for the well-being and health of our patients”. This is how resounding the Doctor Pablo Berenguelresponsible for Sports Medicine Working Group of the Spanish Society of General and Family Physicians (SEMG).

And it is that, according to this specialist, the prescription of physical exercise for patients is especially useful to prevent a large number of health problems:

Premature mortality from any cause.

Ischemic heart disease.

Cerebrovascular disease.

Arterial hypertension.

Breast cancer.

Type 2 diabetes.

The metabolic syndrome.

The obesity.

La osteoporosis.

Functional dependence and falls in the elderly.

Cognitive impairment.

Anxiety and depression.

30 minutes of physical exercise daily

With data from a recent report prepared by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) managed by primary care physicians, the conclusion is very shocking:

In Spain, doing a minimum of 150 minutes of exercise a week, nothing more and nothing less than 1.2 million new cases of non-communicable diseases could be reduced in the year 2050:

410,000 cases of disease cardiovascular

353,000 cases of depression

110,000 cases of diabetes type II

43,000 new cases of cancer.

Fundamental to add strength exercises

Considering all these data, the person in charge of the SEMG Sports Medicine Working Group considers that the medical prescription for patients who come for consultation is carry out at least one of these two plans:

moderate aerobic exercise for a minimum of 30 minutes, five days a week

intense exercise for a minimum of 20 minutes, 3 days a week.

This activity should add 8-10 practice exercises that develop strength of most muscle groups (arms, shoulders, chest, abdomen, back, hips and legs), with 10-15 repetitions of each exercise, at least two days non-consecutive each week.

It is also advisable to dedicate two 10-minute sessions a week to perform 8-10 exercises that maintain flexibility of most muscle groups and tendons.

Why is little ‘prescribed’ physical exercise?

Despite the important therapeutic benefits of physical activity, in our country little physical exercise is ‘prescribed’ as treatment.

And among the reasons that explain this, the fundamental one is that in order to increase the levels of activity of the population that attends Primary Care consultations it is necessary to move from advice to prescription of physical exercise, and this prescription requires a longer dedication time (20 to 30 minutes).

In addition, despite the simplicity in the execution of the physical exercise prescription in the consultation, family doctors are little sensitized about this practice.

and as Pablo Berenguel comments:

“Fortunately lhe trend is changing and our awareness of exercise, proper nutrition and healthy lifestyle habits is growing.”.
