President Milei requests the resignation of two key officials 2024-02-14 10:06:21

The president of Argentina, Javier Milei, requested this Friday the resignation of the head of the National Social Security Administration (Anses), Osvaldo Giordano, and the Secretary of Mining of the Nation, Flavia Royon.

In an official statement, Milei argued that “the current historical moment” requires officials “committed to the modernization, simplification and debureaucratization of the State.” The Casa Rosada also mentioned the “inherited economic crisis” from the previous government, emphasizing that public officials “must understand the harsh reality that Argentines face.”

Both Giordano and Royon are political figures linked to the governors that Milei has criticized for not supporting the “omnibus” law in the Chamber of Deputies. The president has even called them “traitors.”

Giordano, who came to Anses thanks to the governor of Córdoba, Martín Llaryora, was questioned by Milei because his wife, deputy Alejandra Torres, voted against a key article of the official project.

For his part, Royon, a specialist in the private mining sector, had already submitted his resignation, although he clarified that he is not responsible for the decisions of the Salta deputies.

In recent weeks, Milei, along with spokesperson Manuel Adorni and Economy Minister Luis Caputo, have threatened to cut the sending of federal funds to the provinces if their governors did not ensure the support of their deputies for the “omnibus” law.

This initiative, titled “Law of Bases and Starting Points for the Freedom of Argentines”, sought to comprehensively modify the functioning of the country in the political, economic and social spheres. Originally, it consisted of 664 articles, but was reduced to 386 due to social and political pressure.

After its general approval last week, the law suffered a severe setback when it was debated article by article. The rejection of several key points led to the project being sent back to committees for re-evaluation.

The request for the resignation of two key cabinet figures raises uncertainty about the future of Milei’s government. The dispute with the provinces and the failure of the “omnibus” law are signs of a complex and challenging political scenario.

The names of Giordano and Royon’s successors are expected to be announced in the coming days, while the future of the “omnibus” law and the relationship between the national government and the provinces remains uncertain.
