Preventing and Treating Back Pain: Tips from German Orthopedist Matthias Manke and Physical Therapist Alexander Srokowski

German orthopedist Matthias Manke said that back pain has several causes, most notably incorrect body positions, such as an asymmetric shoulder position while driving a car, bending forward during office work, and looking down for long periods when using a smartphone.

Manke added that back pain may also be due to a serious health problem such as a herniated disc, spondylolisthesis, tumor, or curvature of the spine.

The cause of back pain may also be psychological, such as stress, which negatively affects the musculoskeletal system.

To combat back pain, German physical therapist Alexander Srokowski recommended continuing to exercise. You should do exercises to strengthen your back and abdominal muscles, as well as your pelvic floor muscles.

Srokowski also stressed the importance of incorporating motor activities into daily life, as one should – for example – climb the stairs instead of using the elevator, and travel short distances on foot or on a bicycle instead of riding a car.

As for office workers, they must adopt a proper sitting position. The back should assume an erect position, taking into account regular stretching exercises, and getting up and walking a few steps from time to time.

If back pain is due to a disease, drug treatment such as painkillers is used, and surgery can also be used to treat spondylolisthesis or curvature of the spine.
