A mental health workshop to prevent suicide will be held for Korean Americans.

The LA Korean Association announced that it will hold a free workshop with the LA County Mental Health Department on the topic of ‘Suicide Prevention and Recovery’ at the LA Korean Community Center starting at 11 a.m. on the 31st. Anyone can attend this workshop without prior reservation.

In this workshop, an expert from the Department of Mental Health will explain the danger signs of a person contemplating suicide, how to recognize them, prevention and recovery, and related support services.

The Korean Association said, “Just as anyone can catch a cold and get better, anyone can have mental and psychological problems and can improve and get better. This is a workshop where you can attend without any pressure.”

According to the Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the number of Koreans who committed suicide in 2022 was 235, a 15.7% increase compared to the previous year. The number of Koreans committing suicide recorded 232 in 2018 and 205 in 2019, but decreased to 179 in 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic began. Then, it is increasing again to 203 people in 2021 and 235 people in 2022. From 2018 to 2022, a total of 1,054 people committed suicide, or an average of 210 people per year.
