PREVIEW Rainbow Six Extraction: an intense and REACTive first Incursion

In mid-December, we were invited by Ubisoft has a preview event in line of Rainbow Six Extraction, the next co-op licensing title developed in lead to Montreal, inspired by the event Outbreak from R6 wins. The game opposes the Agents well-known to players to a parasitic invasion of extraterrestrial origin and is not without reminiscent of GTFO on certain points (read our impressions). After a video presentation and a solo tutorial to familiarize us with the universe and the commands, which are generally very close to a Destiny 2 and others FPS the kind of controller, so we were able to play for more than 3 hours on the first three cards of a demo build in the company of a demoist d’Ubisoft and our colleague EMB, replaced by another member of the studio during our last games. Clearly we can tell you that this session was very fun, the fun being there even in the face of adversity, a good point for this title which intends to invite itself durably in the video game landscape by becoming “the new benchmark for tactical co-op shooters”.

The fun is there even in the face of adversity.

After a superb cutscene CGI introducing like a science fiction film the threat of Archaeans in the universe of Rainbow Six and the division REACT (Rainbow Exogenous Analysis & Containment Team), we were able to walk the maps Police Station (New York), Tenderloin (San Francisco) and Name (Alaska), whose intensity and difficulty (Moderate, Cautious, Severe) were increasing in the aforementioned order. A fourth area not accessible here will be available in the retail version, Truth or Consequences, with a total of 12 cards. We have to admit it, we only managed to go to the end of the first one, and not necessarily by having succeeded all the objectives, while approaching the completion of the second, but by being the last survivor … The reason is quite simple, we had a hard time at times, but really! Yes, there will be challenges and the various objectives will not be foreign, some being more devious than others. Knowing that it is also possible to play it alone or in pairs, without any bot, you have been warned, it will clearly not be a walk in the park!

Once the card has been chosen by the leader, each of the three team members can select one Agent among a selection in which we find Is it over there, Alibi, Hibana, Sledge, Hunter and Company. We had 12 for this demo (out of 18 planned) and that was clearly not too much. Each has varying amounts of armor and speed, along with a unique ability ranging from heart sensor and sticky proximity mines to auto turret and ally health regeneration. Side loadout, we have at our disposal a main weapon and a secondary one, as well as two tools REACT Tech with on one side explosives (impact or smoke grenades, claymore …) and on the other an equipment (bulletproof vest, kit to relive, drone …). We will therefore have something to vary the pleasures and the tactical options, even if we did not feel a too pronounced impact of the specificities of each during this first contact, but no doubt that an experienced player should succeed in taking advantage of each Agent.

Ubisoft oblige, we find a side light RPG pronounced in the functioning of Rainbow Six Extraction withXP to achieve by achieving objectives and according to kills carried out, used to climb our player level (REACT Milestone), which can also decrease as a result of failures, while repeated use of a Agent increases its rank. Access to the different play areas, the unlocking of the equipment or a higher level of difficulty is done according to this level, points Tech for example being offered as a reward. It will therefore be necessary to hang on to discover all the content.

The course of each part is quite simple, with three increasingly difficult objectives, bringing in more and moreXP. Except that we are faced with an experience bordering on survival, with limited ammunition, resources to find, hordes of enemies to manage at times with very tense situations and a limited time of 15 minutes for each objective. Whether we succeed in the challenge or not, we can go to the next airlock and continue the mission, with on the contrary the possibility of being exfiltrated and not risking losing a comrade. Indeed, each Agent falling in battle sees his status become MY if it is not brought back to an extraction point and will then be rescued during the next part. Rest assured, if you subsequently fail to save it, it will eventually become playable again after a certain number of games and regain all of his health.

Even knowing well a map, each Incursion will therefore be unique. We were led to collect samples in nests ofArchaeans, eliminate enemies ofElite or capture a designated specimen by pulling it to an extraction point, not necessarily requiring too much coordination. In contrast, good communication was necessary during the Triangulation, with the activation in order of three terminals in a limited time, the best being that each one remains close to his own with the risk of being attacked. This was also the case for the rescue of a Agent prisoner of a sort of cocoon, requiring one of the players to extract it while the other two had to destroy the constantly reappearing “branches”, while shooting at the orbs running through them and at the enemies, sometimes at across a large hall. Clearly not easy.

Its difficulty could put off more than one.

Overall, game environments are mostly indoor, the few exteriors serving more as crossing points than anything else, with doors to open and close as needed, nests ofArchéen everywhere, which it is better to destroy so as not to be overwhelmed, and especially the possibility as in R6 wins to destroy certain walls. Note, if we are capable of it, our adversaries too, then it is better to remain on our guards even while believing to be sheltered. As for the types of enemies, the publisher announces 13, some with very hard skin, others coming to explode on us by releasing a gas.

Graphically, Rainbow Six Extraction is quite solid and flatters the retina quite well with well-detailed textures., although we are not here for sightseeing, with a framerate which felt constant to us even as we were using a remote gaming solution. Its artistic direction is it quite marked with a dominant of yellow for all that concerns REACT, from its members to the facilities on each level, coupled with fairly industrial dark green that can be found even in the menus. A visual identity that suits him well. The Archaeans have them this parasitic side similar to Venom, which is also found in the substantia nigra covering surfaces and slowing us down, theEmergence, to be cleaned by pulling on it.

Our first impressions: Good!

Rainbow Six Extraction is on track to be really fun with friends, with parts constantly renewed to avoid monotony and a certain tactical dimension over time, but its difficulty could put off more than one. Fortunately, it will be made available to subscribers Xbox and PC Game Pass, and its system of Pass Ami will allow a loved one to try it temporarily. It remains to be seen whether the sauce will take on the public, because he ultimately does not invent anything that does not already exist elsewhere. As far as we are concerned, we were convinced by this first contact. Also note that the most invested players will also be able to count on a season system and the content endgame Maelstrom Protocol.

Rainbow Six Extraction is available for pre-order on Amazon for € 59.99 in Deluxe edition.
