June 19, 2023 | Through the “Pets in the classroom” Plan that reaches more than a hundred schoolchildren per cycle, the Maneiro mayor’s office promotes respect and animal welfare from the classrooms of the municipality’s schools.

Within the framework of the municipal development plan “Pets in the classroom” on Wednesday, June 7, the first cycle of talks aimed at Maneiro schoolchildren began, promoting respect for animals through the activities developed by the Animal Welfare Department by Virginia Mata.

The activity began in the Bernardo Acosta and Nicanor Navarro municipal schools under the leadership of the lawyer specializing in animal law, Esther Alfonzo.

“The theme is adapted for the child and adolescent community, they are told about animal abuse to encourage schoolchildren to respect and care for them,” Mata said.

This Thursday, June 15, the second cycle of talks on animal respect began in the EU José Manuel Subero, located in the Playa Moreno sector, where Mayor Morel David Rodríguez attended along with the first lady and her work team.

“An animal is a member of the family, so we must take care of them,” he told the children at school.

The Director of Animal Welfare estimated that approximately 180 children have been involved in the discussions in the first cycle last week.

“In Playa Moreno, we hope to reach a larger school community, because we will give the talk to the entire institution from first to sixth grade, which covers several sections,” he said.

The facilitation in charge of Esther Alfonzo, was carried out at the José Manuel Subero school at 9:30 in the morning, where the schoolchildren received a visit from “Eva Luna”, the dog that accompanies this educational and awareness-raising work.

Responsibility is love, respect and care

During the talk, the lawyer Esther Alfonzo indicated to the children the responsibility that having an animal in their care implies, they are sentient beings, she pointed out.

“Education is the key to crime prevention. Children are multiplying entities and by educating them, future abusers are avoided because with actions harmful to animals a criminal begins,” emphasized Alonzo.
