POLITICS – He was « important » to have the vision of all parties. Monday, May 1, Jerome Durain, socialist senator from Saône-et-Loire, took part in the demonstration on the police side, thus taking at his word the invitation of the Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin, who had encouraged parliamentarians to come and observe the work of the police in the field. An experience that the chosen one judges “testing”.

At the beginning of April, senators and deputies had heard Gérald Darmanin after the violence observed during the rally against the mega basins of Sainte-Soline and on the sidelines of certain demonstrations against the pension reform. The Minister of the Interior, who presents himself as the first defender of police officers and members of the gendarmerie, then invited critical elected officials to follow the agents in the field during a day of social protest.

In the Parisian gathering, Jérôme Durain therefore found himself at the head of the procession, where “there were most of the thugs”, with a company of the Brav, within a non-motorized brigade. His goal : “to do substantive work, which is not intended to document police violence, but to try to understand how all this is organized”explained the vice-president of the Senate law commission on France Info this Tuesday, May 2.

Get out of the debate bad cops ” against ” thugs who want to kill cops”

He thus notes “a form of restraint in the police system. Not in the way of intervening, but in the positioning”. “I have the feeling that we are done with the net, which is a good thing”, he points out.

He believes that he now has a more precise vision of the “constraints and the level of violence” that the police can face. “I was scared, it’s very violent and it hits very hard on all sides”he says, judging for example “hallucinating”the number of projectiles aimed at the security forces, of which a hammer, a pommel with a threaded rod and all kinds of cobblestones”.

Nevertheless, it is out of the question to repeat the words of the Minister of the Interior, who refuses to use the term “police brutality” and accuses some protesters of wanting ” kill cop during demonstrations. The elected socialist, he believes that the violence is the fact of “people who have nothing to do with the trade union movement or with political inspirations linked to pensions”.

“If the parliamentary debate is on the one hand the bad police, on the other the thugs who want to kill the cop, we will not get out of it”, believes the chosen one. “Our job is to try to dispassionate the debate; understand what is being implemented; do we have the right tools? Why is it done better and under other conditions in foreign countries? »he summarizes.

According to the Interior Ministry, at least 406 police and gendarmes were injured in the country, including 259 in Paris. An image in particular marked the spirits: that of a police officer seriously burned after a jet of Molotov cocktail.
