Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang said today that “wolf war diplomacy” has enough kindness and goodwill in China’s diplomacy, but when wolves are in power and hungry wolves attack, Chinese diplomats must dance with wolves and defend their home and country.
The National People’s Congress of China held a foreign minister’s press conference this morning. At the meeting, some media asked Qin Gang: “Your appointment as foreign minister is a manifestation of China’s adopting a softer diplomatic approach, and it is an abandonment of the so-called “wolf warrior diplomacy.” It is a signal of the style of international relations. Is China really abandoning the label it used to be seen as tough?
Qin Gang replied, “This question you raised is very interesting. I remember that when I first came to the United States as an ambassador, the American media exclaimed that the “Chinese Wolf Warrior” is here. Now that I am back as foreign minister, I will not be given this title again. I’m really missing something.”
He said that the so-called “wolf warrior diplomacy” is a discourse trap. Those who create this discourse trap either do not understand China and Chinese diplomacy, or ignore the facts, and have ulterior motives. More than 2,000 years ago, Confucius said, “Repay kindness with kindness, and repay grievances with honesty. How can we repay kindness when we repay grievances with virtue?” China’s diplomacy has enough kindness and goodwill, but when wolves get in the way and wolves attack, Chinese diplomats must dance with wolves to defend their home and country.
