Former Smash Mouth singer Steve Harwell died Monday at the age of 56 due to acute liver failure.

The pop rock group’s manager, Robert Hayes, confirmed that he died “peacefully and comfortably” at his residence in Boise, Idaho. On Sunday, Mr Hayes released a statement saying Mr Harwell was in hospice care.

On the X social network, Smash Mouth paid tribute to Steve Harwell, a “larger than life character”. “Steve will be remembered for his unwavering focus and passionate determination to achieve the heights of pop stardom,” the band wrote.

Mr. Harwell was a founding member of Smash Mouth, which is best known for its success as the All Star track that starred in the animated film Shrek. The song was featured on the album Astro Lounge, released in 1999. It was one of two platinum-certified albums on Interscope Records, along with Fush Yu Mang, released in 1997.

The group, founded in San Jose, California in 1994, however, made a name for itself thanks to the song Walkin’ on the Sun, in 1997.

In 2021, Steve Harwell left Smash Mouth. The group then released a statement claiming that Mr Harwell had been diagnosed with cardiomyopathy eight years earlier and had suffered “serious and continuing medical setbacks including heart failure as well as acute Wernicke encephalopathy”.

Before founding Smash Mouth, Mr. Harwell played in a rap group called FOS (Freedom of Speach).
