Research: Attacks on macOS Up 10-fold Since 2019

recent data from Accenture show that the number of attacks directed at macOS grown up 10 times since 2019. Notably, the total has risen from 202four years ago, to 2.295 in 2023; the majority of attacks, it is worth noting, occurred in the last 18 months.

The focus on the system may be the result of its increasing adoption, particularly in corporate environments — since, according to researchesthe use of Macs in companies jumped from 17% to 23% between 2019 and 2020 alone.

Among the activities carried out by criminals are the creation of specific malware, the misuse of certificates, the exploitation of vulnerabilities and attempts to bypass the system’s security defenses.

Furthermore, exploits zero-day for macOS they are uncommon, so their market value is high, reaching millions of dollars; on the other hand, one piece of malware is worth a few thousand. Already on Windows, where they are most found, they are usually cheaper.

Accenture has expressed concern about hackers who have financial resources and try to circumvent the system’s security measures, such as Gatekeeper. Some are even offering $1 million for anyone who finds a way to break into it.

Also in the report, Accenture predicts an increase in macOS attacks. The survey says that, as skilled and moneyed crackers are focusing on the system, the forms of attack available on the so-called dark web will grow.
