Researchers discover solid core inside the moon

Scientists have found evidence of a solid inner core of the moon. Seismological recordings from NASA’s Apollo missions have already provided initial information on the inner structure of the moon. But the data were too imprecise to draw firm conclusions.

Astronomer Arthur Briaud and his team have now combined data from space missions and geophysical measurements. The scientists have now published their findings regarding the moon’s interior in the journal “Nature”.

They found that the moon has a solid inner core with a radius of around 260 kilometers. They also found that the outer core is semi-liquid and has a radius of around 360 kilometers.

These findings are crucial for understanding the mechanism that leads to the occurrence or not of a planetary magnetic field. The research results provide “substantial insights into the timeline of lunar bombardment in the first billion years of the solar system,” writes the research group.
