Residual Holiday Cheer: What Happens to Unsold Christmas Trees After December 25th

2024-01-01 16:00:00

Who still wants to buy a Christmas tree after December 25? More people… Sellers, whether horticulturists or resellers, are well aware of this: their product loses all interest in a couple of hours. So what to do with unsold items? Everyone has their own technique, but the watchword, the guideline, remains forethought… for both sellers and buyers. Because, we quickly realize, there are very few of them who find themselves with Christmas trees on their hands.

House Buchet

In Xhendelesse (Herve), Maison Buchet is a reference for the Herviens. No overstock here. “In our case, since in the last days we cut them gradually in the plot around the store, we have no unsold items. We also source from the Belgian Ardennes but, in the last week, we cut at demand. We operate like this as much as we can.”

The Wayot Paradise

In the heart of Theux, the Paradis du Wayot has found a good technique for the rare fir trees that remain on the ground. “We don’t have many… Personally, as we have an establishment with a sale of sheep, goats, other animals etc., we give the unsold fir trees to our goats. This naturally deworms the goats. As for is not consumed by our goats? We destroy the last branches in wood (or with the shredder).

Chez Boulanger

Horticulturist Jean-Paul Boulanger, route de la Ferme Model in Heusy (Verviers), has “no unsold items”. “I’m going to cut as I go through the end of the Christmas period. I just have maybe two or three left…, which I really cut at the end.”

The fir trees of Noblehaye

Back to Herve, and more precisely to Bolland. In Noblehaye, the Christmas trees go like hot cakes… “Every year, we’re really lucky. We must have four left… The Youth of Ayeneux then comes to get them for their big bonfire, when we have any left (or then we burn them). But generally we always get it right, we never have twenty in excess.”

At Denis Waty

In Malmedy, Denis Waty has nothing left, “everything is gone, and it was the same the two previous years”. “The last ones, I will cut them myself, as I go. The ones that remain are also good for next year,” he smiles.

At Univert

Univert Pauly Andrianne, in Theux, also offers fir trees for sale. “We really didn’t have much left this year. The Wegnez Christmas market takes place between Christmas and New Year, between the holidays. So, they came to pick up what we had left. That makes us happy.”

To the fir trees of the Ardennes

At Raymond Kockelmann, route de Sart to Stavelot, there is no risk of ending up with unsold trees. His wife explains why. “At the end, we cut them at the minute. So we never have an unsold tree. We have our plots, so if someone wants a tree, we will cut it directly. And, obviously, we replant it every year according to what we sold during the year and according to their growth, knowing that it takes between 7 and 8 years for a two-meter tree (and that we have some that are twenty meters). Also note, we rotate our plots and we do not use pesticides: we have Shetland in the plots.”

Chez Floricado

Floricado, in Jalhay, is the JF Rood store. The fir trees here are “recycled”. “I only have two unsold items this year. But I’m lucky enough to be a florist, and to be able to cut the branches for funeral arrangements or at Christmas. As for the big branches, they are crushed.”

Brico Heusy

This year, “everything was sold” at Brico de Heusy (Verviers). “We always sell everything, I almost never have any to throw away,” explains the manager. And when that happens, but it hasn’t happened for 5 or 6 years, we put them in front and they go… We can also give them to the Christmas market in the store parking lot…”

Youth of La Clouse

We close with the Youth of La Clouse (in Aubel), which has placed orders for Christmas trees for several Aubel residents. “We place orders, but we had some unsold items (around fifteen), explains Fanny Corman. We always manage to sell them, and most were sold the following week.” “After the orders, we didn’t really sell any more. We asked Bailou if they didn’t want any, but they already had some. We also contacted Saint Vincent de Paul in Aubel, but they no longer saw the beneficiaries early enough (and people don’t necessarily have the means to decorate it). So, in the end, the last ones finished for the goats at my house”, specifies Clément Beckers, who mentions that the price of the trees is not not sold off in order to respect those who buy the trees at full price.
