«In 2006 I fell in love at first sight. I was 16 at the time, watched an Italian World Cup match on Langstrasse in Zurich and got to know Marco. We are both of Italian descent and we cheered for our team. From that day on we watched every match together. Then came the final when Italy won. We were happy and celebrated together. It was raining non-stop, so we had to seek shelter under an underpass. There he picked me up and kissed me. In that moment it was clear to me: This is him. Since then we have been together and have met again and again.
After a month I went on vacation with my family and lost my cell phone there. With that, his information was gone. I didn’t have any contact information for him. I didn’t even know his full name – all I knew was that I had a friend who lived somewhere in Switzerland and nothing else. Of course I felt very bad. I tried everything possible to find him. But just using his nickname didn’t get me very far. Over time I gave up. But I always knew that there was someone I never really closed with. I thought of him every time I drove past the underpass at Langstrasse.
“After a few seconds I fell in love again”
14 years later, three years ago, I got a request on Instagram. At first I thought it was a fake account. But then I saw the name. It was his nickname. I knew right away that it had to be Marco. I immediately felt like a teenager. I was nervous and didn’t know whether to get back into it or not. Rekindle old love? Is this a good idea? After a moment’s thought, I decided to do it because I had never gotten it out of my head over the years. We wrote back and forth and met up after two weeks. After a few seconds, I was instantly in love again. I felt so sorry for him because he thought I had ghosted him for all these years. He was very relieved when he heard that I had never forgotten him but had lost his contact details. The fact that we found each other again was a stroke of genius of fate.
Shortly thereafter we went on vacation together. At first we were a bit tense, but that quickly subsided. We had a great time that showed us that we belong together. After a year of relationship we emigrated to Italy. That was the most difficult time for us as a couple. We experienced great insecurity, had hardly any money and had to starve at times. We kept arguing and yelling at each other. But at some point we realized that we had to change something, that we had to work together instead of against each other.
“The best birthday present: I’m pregnant”
After a year we went back to Switzerland. We’ve been doing much better since we’ve been back. In hindsight we would have done a lot differently, but I don’t regret anything because it was precisely this difficult time that strengthened our relationship. We learned a lot about ourselves and our partnership. In April we got the best birthday present: I’m pregnant. We are very much looking forward to the new chapter in our lives. And all thanks to fate.”
