Revitalizing the Casino de Vals-près-le-Puy Shopping Mall: Hope for Local Businesses and New Opportunities

The sale announced to Intermarché of the Casino de Vals-près-le-Puy raises questions among the shops in the shopping mall. But many do not hide it: the change of sign is also a source of hope.
Traders are unanimous in regretting a significant drop in footfall in supermarkets, which has consequences for their own activity and therefore their turnover. Bonobo (Beaumanoir group with Cache-Cache and Bréal) speaks for example of a fall of 10 to 20%. The sales period, open since Wednesday, will not change much. Franchises like Jules or Nocibé feel this loss, while retaining a good clientele which comes specially, in other words Casino would no longer be a supplier of clients.
Shopping malls are struggling in France. In Vals, several businesses have closed, such as the Press Hall, a hairdresser, the laundry (which has moved to Val Vert), a fast food area. The shoe repair shop, which also manufactures keys, was taken over a year ago. The closure of the laundry has made the pharmacy happy, which was able to expand a few months ago.
The gallery belongs to Mercialys, which is one of the main real estate companies in France and Europe, listed on the stock exchange, expert in the management, transformation and valuation of shopping centers. It owns a real estate portfolio of around fifty assets made up of shopping centers of various sizes, that of Vals-près-le-Puy being one of the smallest with initially 23 stores.

Looking for new businesses

Mercialys, a subsidiary of Casino for a long time, became independent a little over a year ago. The property company operates its shopping centers under the single brand “G La Galerie”. It separated from two small centers in Marseille. The new director, Anne Juillot, who is in charge of the Vals and Clermont-Ferrand entities, was in Vals on Friday morning for the empty-dressing room operation. This shopkeeper’s daughter wants to believe in the future of the shopping arcade, which she aims to make “a living space”. Or, she says, “The center has to adapt. The empty-dressing room organized over two days is an example of this: the second hand is sought after by customers”. The director delivers a “positive message”. She wants to rely on the animations: after the arrival of the petanque champion Dylan Rocher, of the operation “Recruit your boss”, there will be at the start of the school year “the checkbook of the Chirel zone”. Also a partnership with Initiative 43 to make pitches available to entrepreneurs, as part of sustainable development. For Anne Juillot, these events must fit into the geographical sector: “All traders must work hand in hand,” she says. The director assures: “The gallery is generally in good health”. And to add: “There is a soul here”. Anne Juillot cites the presence of the optician since 1985 as proof of this. To occupy the vacant cells, Mercialys has “tracks”, but no completed projects yet. “We are looking, says the director, for service, catering and local activities”

The crazy success of the empty-dressing room

A vacuum-dressing is held in the shopping mall of Géant Casino since Friday and until Saturday. The clothes that we no longer use are collected there. In return, the public receives vouchers to be consumed in seven shops in the shopping centre. The AVI 43 workshop and the Ponote Collection are associated with the empty-dressing room.

Vouchers for €5 and €10 (valid until July 31) have been distributed since Friday morning in the Géant shopping mall, where a solidarity clearance sale is organized (until Saturday 7 p.m.), in partnership with the yssingelaise association AVI 43 and the Ponote collection. From the early hours of the morning the success of the animation exceeded all expectations.
The Ponote Collection was created about a year ago on the initiative of Stéphanie Anthouard and Hacène Djerdi. Wooden boxes, made at La Manufacture in Blavozy are placed with traders, in certain companies, to receive textiles, shoes, leather goods. The content is collected by the integration workshop of Yssingeaux, AVI 43 to be valued. Workshop employing 14 people. The recycling of textiles and their second-hand resale generate a significant turnover. The “second hand” very trendy today, has in fact been developed for 20 years in Yssingelaise land. A new shop is set up in the first days of July in Fromental.
