, scientists are developing the world’s first finger-prick test to detect brain tumors. According to them, this lateral flow test would improve and extend the lives of tens of thousands of people around the world.
This test, which could be used by patients at home, would also be a vital aid to health services and a credible alternative to MRI exams, with the aim of avoiding their saturation. “Brain tumors are managed with the best treatments available when first diagnosed, but unfortunately recurrence is a major problem and some return very quickly and aggressively. If you have an MRI six months after treatment, at that point, a tumor could have reappeared for some time,” Professor Philippe Wilson explains to our colleagues.
A test soon to be used for other types of cancer?
“This technology would provide regular and affordable disease monitoring to patients at home in an easy-to-use manner. We hope this work can also be applied to other types of cancer, potentially helping to save millions of lives around the world,”
