Sr. Director,

Currently, the number of intensive medicine specialists in Chile and the world is dramatically low compared to the global need for critical beds.

Faced with this worrying reality, for a decade and a half the practice has been implemented in some countries that intensive medicine specialists can remotely monitor critical beds, using the available technology.

Indeed, such professionals give remote instructions to non-specialist doctors and groups of nurses, in order to provide coverage with the specialty and achieve surprisingly good results in terms of patient evolution.

The implementation of a remote monitoring system for critical patients is easy, since it requires cameras and a high-speed internet connection, which thanks to technological development is becoming cheaper, faster and more efficient. Today, it can even be used from a smartphone or tablet.

At Clínica Colonial, more than 20 years ago we implemented an innovative system that consists of remote monitoring of critical patients and assistance 24 hours a day, seven days a week, thanks to which we have achieved significant development in terms of safety, expertise, and management of our group, always monitored through said system.

Unfortunately our example is not being replicated in the rest of Chile. Likewise, in some European countries, as well as in the United States and China, this remote monitoring model represents the main system of coverage of critical beds with intensive medicine specialists, which generates positive results not only regarding the health of patients, but also in terms of efficiency and time savings.
