[香港 11日 ロイター] – The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Chief Executive Li Jia Chao said on the 11th that the superyacht owned by Russian billionaire Alexei Mordashov, who is subject to Western sanctions, is docked in Hong Kong. He said he would not impose sanctions because there is no legal basis.

Mordashov’s luxury yacht docked in Hong Kong last week.

The U.S. State Department has criticized Hong Kong authorities for allowing the entry into the port. It said allowing individuals to use Hong Kong to evade sanctions would carry reputational risks and call into question the “transparency” of the business environment as a financial hub.

Li said Hong Kong would not act on the basis of unilateral sanctions imposed on Mordashov by individual countries or regions. He told reporters that he “cannot do anything without a legal basis”.

On the other hand, it said it would abide by the sanctions imposed by the United Nations. Mordashov and many other Russian billionaires are subject to sanctions by the European Union and the United States, but not by the United Nations.
