“We go around the world 15 times every day at 17,500 miles per hour,” said Rubio, the son of Salvadoran parents who was born in Los Angeles, California, and lived his early years in El Salvador.

Bukele posted the conversation with the astronaut on Twitter, now called X.

“Frank, On behalf of the Salvadoran people, I wanted to tell you that you are a source of pride for us, that a son of Salvadorans has reached space is the first time.“, the president told him.

Rubio, who traveled to the ISS on September 21, 2022, should have returned to Earth last March, but “unfortunately” the Soyuz MS-22 spacecraft suffered damage, so his return will be next September, after a year and a week.

“Our ship, well, we don’t know if a meteorite hit it or it was a mechanical failure,” Rubio explained to Bukele.

The astronaut reported that in the Space Station “the first two weeks it is a little difficult to get used to handling your body to float, you feel a little dizzy. Well, after that it feels very normal.”

He said that the station “really is a small space” and compared it to “the size of a house with four to five rooms”, and that in order not to get bored you have to “keep your mind agile, read, study or do various things”.

“It is a great honor for me to represent the country and our people. I hope that we can help the youth of El Salvador in the future,” said Rubio.

Last June, during a meeting from the ISS with a group of Hispanic children, Rubio predicted that “there will be someone who speaks Spanish on the Moon and on Mars,” and that the presence of Latino astronauts will be “more and more common.” on space missions.
