Severe thunderstorms: here are the sectors affected

The passage of a cold front created uplift and a collision between the air masses (warm towards the surface and cool at altitude), which formed thunderstorm cells. The heat and humidity, very present this Saturday afternoon, fueled this violent weather. Linear thunderstorms, following the curve of the cold front have developed. This type of cell is well organized and often quite powerful.


Good to know : a severe thunderstorm is characterized by gusts of up to 90 km/h or more, hailstones 2 cm in diameter or more and heavy rain: 50 mm/h or more.


Storms are heading east

The north shore of the St. Lawrence River, from the Outaouais to the North Shore are the sectors that could hear thunder rumbling during the day.

The regions of Pontiac, Gatineau and Haute-Gatineau were on severe thunderstorm alert. Mont-Laurier and the Laurentians on the eve of violent storms. On the side of our Ontario neighbors in Pembrooke, we recorded 10.2 mm of rain in one hour! In the Outaouais and the Laurentians, several hundred homes were without electricity.

Radar last hour

The long band of less and less linear storm cells is heading towards Mont-Tremblant and the St. Lawrence River. This stormy band will lose intensity during the evening. Some areas are likely to receive between 30-40 mm of rain. The thunderstorms will head east and should reach Montreal around 10 p.m. The Montérégie is also at risk of being affected, but the storms will lose intensity during the night. Lightning and heavy rain are likely to be present but the severe thunderstorms will dissipate.
