Thalita do Valle “was a heroine and her vocation was to save lives,” said her brother, who had last communicated with her on June 27.

Last Thursday, Thalita was fighting alongside fellow Brazilian Douglas Búrigo in Kharkiv, when the Ukrainian city was the target of a Russian bombardment. His brother said that there were successive attacks and the battalion was divided, so Thalita went to the bunker, where a fire had already broken out. “The bunker was closed with her inside,” explained Théo Rodrigo Vieira, adding that she died of suffocation.

Búrigo, 40, tried to rescue her and also died.

Thalita do Valle was a native of Ribeirão Preto, a municipality in the interior of São Paulo, and in her youth she was a model and actress, later graduating from law school. She later became a first responder and participated in a mission against the Islamic State in the Kurdistan region of Iraq.

In the Kurdish Army, she specialized in precision shooting with long weapons, and received training to become an elite sniper.

Thalita was only in the Ukraine for three weeks.

“She was always involved in humanitarian missions, with the foreign legion of some country or in Brazil,” said her brother, adding: “She was always moved by the feeling of saving animals and humans. My sister was always peaceful, a true progressive. The weapons are part of a context, the war, but she saved lives”.
